New Journalism

I’ve visited three incredible startups in the first 48 hours since being back in New York. Some initial takeaways: LearnVest – their first live event at the Metropolitan Pavilion on Tuesday night brought hundreds of women to learn about finances and how to live our “richest” lives.  Founder Alexa von Tobel founded the NY-based company after realizing that…

3 Lessons in Organization

Organizations seek organized people.  I used to think I was organized. I made to-do lists, after all. But when I couldn’t find those lists… So, I’m not very organized. It took me the entire span of college and several failed jobs to realize that. But once you recognize your organizational flaw, there are good habits…

What’s Your Story?

What's Your Story?

Came across this post by Sarah Peck, where she poses a scenario.

Imagine that in five years you are being featured on a magazine cover. You are the spotlight, your story is being told. As surreal as this may sound, three questions:

First, what magazine would it be?

Second, what would the headline say about you or your project?

More importantly, what would the article be about?

-----

It gets you thinking. This is a worthwhile exercise for anyone who dares to dream big. I'm going to try this myself and will share my responses in a future post.

Adding Value

We’ve all heard the start-up narrative. Bootstrapped college drop-outs work out of a garage, build fast, get cash, strike it rich, and save the world. Being part of a start-up is nothing short of being a rock star, or at least from what you see on Twitter. In all seriousness, though, start-up fever is taking…

The New Face of Online Education

College theoretically ends after graduation. Between job rejections, an anemic bank account, and weekly ‘what am I doing with my life’ meltdowns, there are plenty of reminders signifying that the idyllic days of college are gone. But from a learning standpoint (because that’s what college is really about), our education is far from over.  The World Wide…

2 + 2 =

Everyone is jumping on the storytelling bandwagon. I say that not in condescension, but in gladness. Before KONY 2012 went viral and was touted as a new media sensation, storytelling was already recognized as a crucial vehicle for awareness. Done well, it made all the difference between Hollywood classics versus duds, election winners versus losers,…

End of the World

On Thursday, I launched a new series for NextGen Journal, a platform featuring voices of the next generation. My column is called End of the Old World. While melodramatic in name, it’s hopeful in outlook. We celebrate those with ideas and solutions.  Despite the messed-up economy, the young broke and beautiful can create their own opportunities.…

A Manifesto

To those who read the following in its entirety, thank you.  This is not intended to be a monologue but a conversation. In an attempt to practice the collaboration I write about, I welcome all comments- positive or negative – because they are the only way to combat my individual bias. Regardless, thanks for entertaining.…

Is it Serendipity, or Life?

Have you ever thought about how certain people entered your life?  Not why, but simply how. What event planted the seeds for that life-changing friendship? Partnership? Love? The answer is often as mundane as, ‘I had no choice. We were forced to work together on a group project.’ Or as awkward as ‘We both really liked…
